I don't know that I've ever gone this long without a post, time is flying by. I've been buried in work with a few short breaks in between. My brother came to visit at the end of August giving me time to finally stitch and finish my mom's ornament from last Christmas. So it's a little (okay, a lot) late, what's new?

Shepherd's Bush - Glad Tidings

It looks like we're going to having a very colorful fall, if we actually have fall this year. The temperatures have dropped and it feels more like winter. As much as I'm glad to see the heat and humidity gone, I'm not ready for it to be cold yet.

There are times when I don't leave my house for weeks (sometimes months) on end, especially when I'm busy working. The past month or so has been no exception but I finally got out last week to do some much needed shopping. Groceries, finishing supplies, ATM, printer cartridge, you name it, I needed it. I got no further than my first stop at Joanns when I had a kidney stone attack standing right at the cutting counter. Once I caught my breath after the first knife twisting pain, my brain kicked into bargaining mode - what do I "have" to have today, what can I leave until next time, how long until I can't stand the pain? Does anybody else do this?

In my 20's I would've soldiered on and taken care of everything I needed to. In my 30's I would've taken care of most everything. Now that I'm in my 40's it can all wait. I told myself to quit being stupid and to just get back home (or maybe it was because I was with my mom). To my bed, to my meds, to anything that would make me feel better. I'm still recuperating but feeling much better. All this has left me with a burning question though - am I becoming more of a wuss the older I get or am I just getting smarter?

Needless to say I am behind on email, I'm slowly but surely getting caught up. I'm also getting closer to getting all of my PIF's finished, I hope the wait is worth it.

It's that time of year when the new Christmas fabric lines are hitting the stores. I've learned the hard way to get them while the gettin' is good. :) If you look real hard, you'll see my only stitching stash purchase since early in the year (at least I think it's been that long!). Can't pass up those Blackbird stockings, too cute!

This little set went to Diane as a welcome back home gift when she visited the U.S. last month. It was the first time I made one of the thread holders, it turned out okay but for some reason, really tested my patience. I used the tutorial from The Stitching Room.

All the heat and humidity has the garden in full bloom, it's a beautiful thing to wake up to.

A big thank you to everybody for the comments both here and via email about the Beach House pincushion. Who knew my sleepless night would turn out so well?

Thanks also for all the suggestions on sleeping but really, it's normally not a problem at all as long as I stay away from the chocolate. :)

Beach House Pincushion.....

What does a restless night and a link for a tutorial result in?

I don't sleep much so when my head hits the pillow I'm asleep. Dead asleep. Just ask anybody who's ever tried to wake me. And when I wake up, I'm wide awake.

Occasionally though, something goes haywire (we won't talk about the late night piece of chocolate in an otherwise caffeine free diet that could be the cause) and I just toss and turn until I finally fall asleep. This time I decided to do something productive, who cares if it was 3am? I mean, what's the use of all that tossing and turning anyway? It never helps. Nor does punching the pillow or flipping it over or tossing the covers off only to pull them back on again.

Most times, my brain takes off on a tangent during the tossing and turning phase which doesn't help matters any. Usually silly stuff that seems very important at the time. Very much on my mind this night was the need to replace a 5 year old pincushion that has definitely seen better days. Add that to an email sitting in my inbox from Debs with a tutorial for a biscornu made from fabric. I knew what fabric I wanted to use - Blackbird's Beach House line. So I flew out of bed, turned on my laptop and sewing machine, lugged my rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat out, I was on a mission.

All of this sounds like a brilliant use of time doesn't it? I thought so, until I actually sat down at the sewing machine and couldn't see what I was doing because I was yawning non-stop. I was determined to finish though, how hard could it be? I discovered that I have no patience when I'm tired. None. Which is why, after ripping seams twice just sewing the 4 patches together and attempting to sew them into a biscornu shape twice, I gave up and went to bed.

I woke with the intention to finish it and another idea already rattling around in my brain. I had all that lovely chenille trim that I hadn't played with yet. And wait, I also have that huge bag of crushed walnut shells. Why not make a square pincushion and trim it with the chenille? I'm really pleased with the outcome but learned a lesson, next time I'll just stay in bed and toss and turn. Or better yet, maybe I'll think twice about that piece of chocolate. :)

Not much else going on, I took advantage of a birthday discount and stocked up on some lovely colors of Weeks Dye Works wool and a pattern from Fig Tree Quilts.

And in the garden.....

Cathy L - Organizing can be over-rated, especially those times I can't find things I know I have but can't remember where I 'organized' them to!

Angela - The bone folder - I use it to crease paper and poster board but it's also handy to poke out fabrics corners.

Helen - I wish I had room for another shoe organizer on top of the first. It's set up in a closet and the shelf above has a bracket that's in the way. :(

To clear some confusion I caused in my last post - the Joann's order was the picture with the scissors etc. The ribbons were from 2 different online shops.

I know I've mentioned organizing my work space far too many times in my posts. With a steady stream of stash and finishing supplies coming through the door it's a necessity, especially when dealing with limited space. Sometimes thinking waaaay outside the box is a good thing. Sometimes not. I thought the shoe organizer shown below was the perfect answer for my out of control fabric stash. Slowly but surely I've worked on ironing, refolding and stacking. With it already 75% full and 50% of my fabric still to do, I've come to the sad conclusion that there's not the slimmest chance it will all fit. Back to the drawing board.

In this economy I find myself trying to be a smarter stash shopper. I don't know about everybody else but shipping charges are a huge consideration. I automatically pass by those shops that charge a flat rate based on the dollar amount spent. Instead of ordering 1 thing, I make lists and try to order as much as possible from 1 source. When possible, I try to stock up during sales. I lucked out with an order from Joanns, all I really needed/wanted was the pinking Olfa cutter and the bone folder. With a coupon for free shipping with a $25 purchase, I added the rest of the items, all on sale, for a grand total of $26.43.

HOE Biscornu exchange to Sally.....

Sally has received the biscornu exchange package I sent.

I don't think it's any secret that I love creating these little tuffets. For some reason though, I had a very hard time deciding on what to stitch this time. I started several different designs with several different color combinations before I made up my mind. This one is a variation of Indigo Rose's Pretty In Pink. It's hard to tell in the photo but it's stitched on R&R 30ct Elizabethan Green linen with Gloriana and NPI silk. Instead of stitching a back, I opted for a dupioni silk and edged it with Miyuki metallic blue beads. Despite my indecision, I really love how this one turned out.

Hoe Biscornu Exchange from Lynn B.

I received an adorable cupcake biscornu from Lynn. She also included a stitched fob, floss, ribbons and a beautiful handmade card, Lynn is clearly very talented!

First, thanks so much for the sweet comments on the SB fob.

Stitching Cat Deb - The organizational cubes came from Michaels in the scrapbooking section. You can configure them however works best for you, that's just one of the things I love about them. Be warned though - by the time I was through I'd put in almost 1,000 screws, tough on the hands!

Craft-i-leigh - I prefer linen in the 32-36-40 count range. It's always hard to change from something you're comfortable with. Waaaaaaaaaay back in the day when I graduated from Aida, I went to Lugana and/or Jobelan before I graduated to linen. As for brands, I prefer Zweigart Belfast when stitching samplers and for smalls I prefer a stiffer linen such as Wichelt, Brussels or Northern Cross.

The release of the casket has been delayed a bit, we are still trying to find just the right trim.

That's right, pick your jaws up, a stitching finish that isn't exchange related. :) I've carried this with me for the past couple of weeks stitching a minute here and there and finally finished it late last night. I'm sure some of the eagle eyes out there will notice it doesn't look exactly like the cover photo. I decided to stitch this one over 1 making it measure just around 1 1/4". With it so tiny, the pale blue was washed out so I substituted a darker shade.

can somebody please explain why it was 77 degrees in Missouri in November? And why the forecast is the same for the next 3 days? I'm a gal who dislikes summer and looks forward to fall, winter and spring. Last week the temperatures were low enough that the pilot light on the heater was lit, all the fans were cleaned and put away and slippers and gloves were taken out of storage in preparation. No, I'm not crazy (maybe a little but not about this), a medical condition dictates that I wear gloves outside once the temperatures hit the 50's. I even took a picture and had planned a little celebration post that fall was here. I'm not celebrating but here's the picture anyway. :(

Most everybody knows I'm not really a frou-frou type of person. The one exception are my gloves, if I have to wear them then why not go all out? LOL

I just finished putting together my last exchange package of the year. It's a floss tag and for some reason, what should have been the simplest exchange turned out to be the hardest. Maybe it's because I knew it was the last until next year. Anyway, I'll be back with pictures later this week.

I'm on the hunt for 2 Prairie Schooler designs - Christmas Trees #82 and a freebie called S is for Spring. Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks to you all for the comments on the Halloween Exchange bag! I worried about this one right up until it was finished, I'm glad you like it. Now if the post office would cough it up all would be right in the world. Gwen was out of town and her mail was being held when it arrived at her post office. The delivery confirmation scan shows delivered on the 22nd but she has yet to receive the package.

Joann - I owe you an email, I'm sure it comes as no surprise that I'm behind! I did want to answer your question about the pattern I used - it's from Amy Butler and called Frenchie Bags. I altered it quite a bit and substituted the stitching for what was supposed to be a fabric band. Let me know if you want further info about what I did.

A - I'll email you with details on the fabric, floss and design changes I made on the stitching part.

I'm off to dig a fan back out and am not happy about it!

I had a lot of fun making this year's bag even though I made a few mistakes along the way. It was a huge learning curve, the original pattern for the bag was much larger than I needed and had to be reduced to just the right size. Fun stuff when there's a pleat involved. :)

I used part of the sampler from The Prairie Schooler's When Witches Go Riding leaflet for the front band. The back band used the lettering and bird from the same sampler.

I sure hope my partner liked it!

I found this poor forgotten post in my drafts last night. :( Bad habit of mine, I hope I'm forgiven.

This surprise package arrived on my doorstep from Ms. Diane. Again I thought it was for another purpose and was surprised when she told me they were for me. :) Personally, I think she is trying to draw me over to her dark side, have you see her scissor collection? She's always accusing me of dragging her to the dark side of stitching smalls, maybe this is her way of getting even! If so, I'll gladly and quietly come along.

It's hard to believe it's almost Halloween but proof arrived this weekend in the form of an exchange package from Val (samplar101). This is the 3rd year I've participated in the Legacy Halloween Sweetbag Exchange. Val sent an eye-popping package - the bag itself is amazing enough but then she stuffed it full of all kinds of Halloween goodies - hand towels, oven mitts, slippers, socks, earrings, a Kelmscott needle minder, candy, hot chocolate, I'm sure I've missed something but it's all in the photos below.

I should be back midweek with photos of the exchange package I sent, yes, late again. Sigh....

Email has once again piled up, the past couple of weeks have been more than hectic, sorry for those of you who were worried. It may take me a day or two to get everything answered but I am working on it.

Just a quick post because the emails are starting to come in asking if I'm okay - I am, just feeling the licks of the whip from over in Thailand. :) I'm racing to finally get Rhapsody In Red 4 finished and as always, I am way behind in replying to emails.

I'll leave you with pictures of the effect the rains have had on the yard and the recent flooding from Ike.

It started with the rains in July - a hole about the size of a basketball. The rains in August left this -

Filled it with concrete and had a plan for topsoil and sod next spring until both Gustav and Ike came through and collapsed a portion of it -

A Queen, at last.....

After what seems like a 100 pictures, here she is at last, at least this was the best of the lot. I used silk ribbon on both the ruffles and the curly ribbon at the top. Hidden in the folds of the ruffles are tiny crystal pins matching the yellow-ish stripes in the sheep.

HOE Needleroll exchange to Alison.....

I was glad to hear my HOE Needleroll exchange package arrived today. It traveled to Alison in Australia and as always I was worried until I heard she'd received it.

I used a design from Keepsake Stitches called Bunnies In The Berry Patch. Instead of a normal needleroll, I stitched a front and back so it is joined on both sides instead of just down the back. Both the lace and little bunny were from my stash, there's a reason I pick up odds and ends, just never know when they will come in handy. :)

I tried taking pictures of Queen this afternoon but the lighting was terrible so I guess I'll be back again tomorrow.

Today was one of those mail days I love and my postal person doesn't. :) I "thought" one of the packages I received was for the HOE Needleroll exchange, instead I was surprised with Margaret's PIF package. She sent a gorgeous journal with a stitched piece from SALexandre attached to the front, a notepad, chocolate (alway yummy), a pen with a gold butterfly on the case, tea, a wonderful handmade card and wrapped it all in jelly bean paper. :) I can't stop touching and looking at the journal, my picture really doesn't do it justice.

Also in the mail today was a package of fabric. I'm sure that's not exciting to most of you but to me it is, I love fabric and stash is stash. This package held a special fabric that I thought I'd never find again, it's one I use quite a bit and goes especially nice with the Carriage House Samplings stockings. It was pure dumb luck that I stumbled across it again and to be sure, I ordered enough to last a while.

New floss drops with tiny little heart flowers in pinks and reds, much cuter than the picture, hard to get a good picture when it's gray and overcast.

The latest little sheep kit from Shepherd's Bush, I really wasn't sure I liked this one but it didn't take very long at all for it to grow on me.

This unexpected gift came from Wawanna at Dazzling Ornaments. My picture does it no justice, the workmanship is just outstanding.

I also finished my needleroll for the HOE exchange, on time too, can you believe it!?! I'll be back soon with photos.

Couldn't sleep last night, normally I fall into bed and am out within minutes. Tossed and turned, did all those silly things we all do thinking it will help and finally gave up. These are what came from my restlessness, I think my favorite so far.

Mermaid Floss Tag.....

My itchy fingers didn't have to wait long - I decided to spend some time with the Mermaid Sampler kit while company was here last week. It's stitched over one with a few design details changed because of the size and every stitch was a pleasure. Then I decided such a special design needed special thread drops. I played around with some metallic colors but ended up designing something in my photo software. It's hard to see in the photo but the drops have little dots of colors taken from the stitched design.

Speaking of the metallic thread drops, I've added them to my Stash Sale as well as new fabric choices.

A couple of weeks ago Diane decided she couldn't keep the final piece of the Rhapsody In Red set a secret any longer. Truthfully, it was no small miracle that she kept it secret as long as she did. :) The pictures below are JUST a rough mock-up made from screen shots of the design, just imagine silk and trim and hardware to get an idea of what the final piece will actually look like. It's been so long since I've been stash shopping I'd almost forgotten how much fun it is to open the package and drool. I'd also forgotten just how quickly my fingers start itching and how hard it is to resist the urge to start one of them right that minute. This one went all the way to Margaret in New Zealand, I have to confess I was very worried that it would take forever to reach her despite traveling via priority mail.

I really had a lot of fun putting this package together. I had made the decision early on to try and make as many of the goodies as possible. The floss drops were no problem, I'd already experimented with those. I hadn't finished a floss tag yet but figured it couldn't be too much different than the tag I made for Valeri's Halloween bag last year. The flower pins were a little more challenging but I was pleased with the final result.

first this lovely package arrived from a dear friend across the ocean. I've been blessed to receive several stitched items from her, each more beautiful than the last. I hope she realizes how much I appreciate it and just how special she is. :)

The second package came all the way from Ina in Holland, she drew my name for the HOE Little House Needleworks exchange. Ina did a wonderful job of stitching and finishing the Wool Needlebook and Fob. The goodies included are shown in the picture below, everything is just fantastic.

It's hard to believe.....

that the month is almost over! I know this is a recurring complaint of mine but where the heck did it go? The first part of May is always hectic, there's Mother's Day and then we have 5 birthdays with just 4 days in between each one. My birthday is the last of the 5 and honestly, by the time it arrives I'm just relieved to see it come and go. :)

I treated myself to a new wireless All-In-One printer - the perfect size for my work room, one less reason to run up and down the stairs, always a good thing.

I had planned to take a day or two off and stitch but got side tracked by another project I've been wanting to get to for a while.

The little basket started out as a prototype for a finishing job but then I decided to make it match the thread drops. It also gave me an excuse to play in my collection of scrapbook paper, something else I rarely get a chance to do lately.

I can't forget to show you a picture of Roxy (she belongs to my neighbor) all decked out for a bachelorette party - I couldn't get her to give the sticks up long enough to get a picture without, still cute though.

Rhapsody In Red Part III.....

Late again (to those of you shaking your head and saying what's new about you being late? - quiet please LOL)! This set was scheduled to be released in March but of course I caught the flu, delay #1. The end was finally in sight when my alter ego "Ms. Picky" made an appearance and delayed the release a bit longer. I think Diane and I are still not believing it's really finished. I truly hope it was worth the wait.

for all your kind comments on the biscornu I stitched for Becky. :) I've been asked about the design - it's based on a chart from Lois Norford titled Linen & Lace Accessories Box - I believe it's out of print. Some of the original design is still there but I did modify it quite a bit.

I participated in the biscornu exchange over on the Hooked On Exchanging blog, you know I can't pass up making a biscornu! :)

I received a beautiful biscornu from Sonda along with ribbon, fabric, Silk Weaver linen, Carrie's Creations floss and a lovely chart from Crown & Thistle titled Witches Pocket - all Halloween related.

My package was a couple of days late but flew to my partner Becky arriving in just 2 days.

I was really happy to hear it arrived, I always end up with butterflies in my stomach worrying that my partner won't like what I've stitched or will dislike the goodies I've enclosed. Does this happen to anybody else or is it just me?

Thanks for the kind comments on my new blog look - I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed programming and it's been lots of fun. So much fun that I offered to do one for a friend but she informed me that she wasn't ready for a change until summer! LOL

To be perfectly honest, I'm just weird - period. I know it and accept it as do most people who know me. LOL That said, here are a few of the least weird or random facts about me:

I don't drink coffee, in fact, the smell turns my stomach

I sit on the floor when I'm stitching

I really dislike shopping at the mall

I hate wearing shoes and am barefoot whenever possible

Ugh, the flu. It ran through my family one by one and despite my telling everybody to stay away, I ended up with it. Almost everybody I talk to has either had it or knows somebody who's had it. It's been a slow recovery but I'm just about feeling human now. I hope you all are well and taking care.....

Being sick(er) forced me to relax in bed with the laptop which allowed time to finally finish a new template. I know it's quite different but I've really had fun putting it together.

I also got a start on the big move of my stitching albums, for the time being they are in the same place as my finishing album. I don't want to change the link in the sidebar with half in one album and half in the other but will once the move is completed.

I thought I'd take a minute to post about one of the latest changes on eBay - the new search page. If like me, you find it user UN-friendly, you can change back to the old search format. Simply scroll to the bottom of any search page, there should be a link to opt out of the new search format. Just my opinion but right now it's too difficult to navigate, especially when you want to search item descriptions in addition to titles.

I'll leave you with a picture of my Christmas cactus - I should quit calling them that. All this crazy weather has postponed the blooming season, they're almost Easter cactus at this point.....

and lastly, my one and only stitching stash addition since my last post. Not sure how I feel about the linen yet but the snowman is very cute.

croak, croak, cough, cough. I've got another cold and is it any wonder with the crazy weather we've had the past week? The high last Wednesday afternoon was 73, less than 6 hours later the tempurature had dropped to 14, the wind was howling bringing sleet and snow along with it. By Friday morning we had 9" of snow on the ground. Monday brought another high in the 70's, today we are hovering around freezing and have had a mix of rain and snow on and off all day. This is nothing compared to the devastating weather to the east of me last night and my heart goes out to those affected.

I received some very unfortunate news last week that Epson is closing the Photo Album portion of their website on April 30th. While disappointed, I was very happy that they were giving everybody plenty of notice, or so I thought. The albums will be open until April 30th but new photos couldn't be added after Feb. 1st. This news put me in full out panic mode. With almost 900 photos to move and not a clue where to move them, I spent almost an entire day checking out all the available choices. Not really finding anything that fit my needs, I decided to at least find a home for my finishing album and get started on that. All the photos have been moved and at least half have captions, I'll catch up with the rest as I can. I'm also exploring adding a photo album on my website - that involved upgrading which means I have my own little piece of the internet now. :) The link for my new website as well as the new finishing album are listed over on the right. Once I decide where to move my stitching albums I will update that link both here and on my website.

In between the sniffling and researching and moving photos I did find a little stiching time:

Remember when I said I was spoiled? It was absolutely confirmed when I received this too-gorgeous-for-words box all the way from Thailand. Diane had mentioned it was on the way but to be honest, I thought it was for one of the many "future" projects we've talked about, I never dreamed it was all for me. I truly don't know what I've ever done to deserve such warm, caring and generous friends but am thankful each and every day to have them in my life.

to woohoo about I hardly know where to start! :)

Some of you will remember that both my stitching room television and lamp died at Christmas last year. Apparently that was the start of a tradition that I would very much like to put an end to - this year it was the hard drive on my laptop. After weeks of debating fix or replace, I finally replaced it last weekend. While I wasn't without a computer, the laptop has made my life much easier, less trips up and down the stairs I like to periodically fall down.

I finally finished my Christmas baking last week. I was feeling very bad that packages weren't sent in time for Christmas this year until a friend informed me I wasn't late but 11 months early. I like that kind of thinking!

This year's offerings:

I don't dare send a package without the Buckeyes and Peanut Blossom cookies, the rice crispy treats were an addition for my nephew. The center cookie is a Chewy Pecan recipe that didn't make the cut or, as my oh so tactful uncle likes to say - it was good but we don't need to have that again. LOL

I'm always amused by my sister's insistance that despite the fact that she is married, "ALL" the cookies are hers. Her husband used to let her get by with it but in the past couple of years has started protesting. This has provided some hilarious situations and this year was no different. She woke the day after the cookies arrived to find a message from her husband on the shower wall:

Do I really need to say that checking on "her" cookies won out over jumping in the shower?

Last fall the very same sister asked if I could make her a baby cube for an expecting friend, of course I said sure, no problem, expecting to have it done by the due date. I kept putting it off, mostly due to my indecision on design and colors choices. I was told blue and chocolate brown and couldn't make her understand just how many blue and brown flosses there are. Then I found this too cute Bella Baby fabric and went from there.

Today's mail brought a package of lovely surprises, I hope you can see the detail on the gorgeous fob, stitched over one and teeny tiny, my initial is on the back side. I am truly blessed to have friends that put up with me and still spoil me rotten.

Also in the mail, the latest addition(s) to my every growing fabric stash. These charms are the perfect size for most finishing projects and I love them.

I think I'll quit here and save other woohoos for my next post but before I go - I've had many e-mails asking the designer/design name of the biscornu I stitched for the JAT Christmas exchange. The original design is in the 2004 Just Cross Stitch Ornament issue. The designer is Periwinkle Promises - Christmas Ornament 2004. I stitched the design as charted but added a row of couched ribbon in place of the four-sided stitch they have charted.

My oh my, where did this year go?

I managed a very last minute Christmas stitching present, it's a modified version of a new kit from Shepherd's Bush made into an ornament:

I can finally reveal one of the reasons this year has been so crazy and why I've been a bit of a flake lately. :)

Diane of Sampler Cove contacted me during the summer wanting to know if I would be interested in finishing an upcoming design. I don't think either of us had an inkling at the time that the project would take on a life of it's own. She's already released the first chart - a gorgeous sampler titled Rhapsody In Red.

The second chart is ready for release shortly, the first of 3 charts of smalls using the same motifs and design elements of the large sampler.

There will be a fifth and final chart with a very special design to hold the smalls.

Life has been insane these past few months, I'm alive, perhaps dragging my fanny a bit, but still alive. Nothing like receiving daily e-mails asking if I'm okay to make me realize just how long ago my last post was. :)

Halloween Exchange

This is the second year I've participated in Legacy's Halloween Exchange, I had even more fun with it this year than last. :)

This is the wonderful package I received from Donna -

a lovely treat bag, silks, a book on samplers and chocolate, what more could a girl ask for?

Valeri was my partner this year - I decided to really go out on a limb and make an actual purse type bag, a first for me. It has some boo-boos but I was happy with the end result and had lots of fun picking out the treats.

I had the design picked out the minute I saw the chart hit the market but then started second guessing myself when I saw both Debs and Andrea had received the same design in their Halloween exchanges. I just couldn't find anything I liked as well that would work for what I had in mind, I'm very happy I stuck with it.

My stitching day a week fell by the wayside, all I have to show for the past month is a Halloween fob from Shepherd's Bush:

Baking

I did find some time to do a little baking, cupcakes based on a recipe in my local paper, they were supposed to be cherry limeade but since lemon is one of my favorites in cake and pies, I decided that was the way to go.

Paybacks

There are 14 years between by youngest sister and I, this has posed all kinds of interesting situations over the years. She is only 4 years older than my oldest child, it was not unusual for people to assume I was her mother also. She found all those lovely ways to embarrass me when she was young - out in public, talking as loud as possible, you know the questions kids ask that just leave you wishing the floor would open up and swallow you?

I had thought when she went away to college her ability to mortify me would end but found out during her second summer home that was not the case. Picture an evening out at a local pub, an evening of burgers, beer, pool playing and darts, me with a date. Newly legal to drink, she'd probably had a beer too many and was very goofy. :)

As it always happens, in that moment when there isn't another sound and again, talking as loud as she could, she informed my date and everybody else in the place that she'd seen me without a bra and my boobies sagged.

I should say that I was just bouncing back from a long illness and surgery that left me about 20lbs underweight, I'm not even sure I had enough boobies to sag at that point. LOL Regardless, I was so stunned by her remark I couldn't even speak.

I never said a word to her about it until last year, when at about the same age I was when this event took place, she had her first child and yes, is less than enamored with her own boobies now. :) She chose to whine to me about it and I finally reminded her of what she'd said to me. Her very loud intake of breath told me she had no clue what she'd said that night.

Out shopping for her birthday card last month, I had several in my hands when something drew me to this card from Red Tree Studios, never dreaming until I opened it just how perfect it was for her.

But of course I had to have the 4 newest Shepherd's Bush kits, the Happy Halloween fob is one of them. I won't have to time to complete either of the other Halloween designs but am planning to make time to stitch the Family Sampler soon. Sure I am.

Remember the Indigo Rose freebie I was looking for a couple of posts back? That was my intended project this week. I couldn't realistically set aside an entire day but made a good start. I had planned on finishing it as a biscornu but then wasted part of my allotted stitching time brainstorming a different finishing technique. I hope it works out as I'm seeing it in my brain, if not, well, it won't be the first or the last time an idea has tanked. LOL

I'll leave you with a progress picture, hopefully to be followed with a completed picture next week:

I received another one of those "feel good" packages from another dear friend this week, I had been told it was coming but had no idea of the contents, was I ever surprised when I opened it!

She not only made both the beautiful crystal scissor keepers but designed and stitched the gorgeous biscornu just for me. Knowing she doesn't have much stitching/crafting time lately makes them all the more special. :)

You know how they say you should allow yourself a cheat day when you're on a diet? I've decided that rule applies to stitching too. :) While not exactly cheating, I'm setting aside at least one day a week to stitch because not stitching is making me a very cranky lady.

More Random Stuff.....

I still have no stitching time so I thought I'd share a few finds that might be of interest.

This little gizmo was recommended by my brother as an answer to my never ending concerns over losing all the pictures and documents on my computer. It holds 2gb of data, plugs right into any open USB port. Microsoft has a free program called SyncToy, very useful to back up or transfer files. Can be found for around $20 on sale in my area, worth any price for peace of mind.

Another never ending concern is getting organized. I found this last week at Hobby Lobby, $19.99 regular price but even better at $12 with the 40% coupon.

Found at Michaels for around $3, the perfect size to make one of those fabulous cross stitch and fabric covered tins. Measures approximately 5" x 3" x 1.5".

Pretty high on my list of lovely surprises are unexpected packages in the mail. Sent by one of my dearest and perhaps the oldest (to clarify, I do not mean she is old age wise) of my internet friends, I can't even remember now exactly when/how we met. Neither here nor there, I spent a considerable amount of time playing with the crystal pins, dupioni, buttons, ribbons and linen. Thank you again.

Completely random and non-stitching related - 7 months ago I decided to switch a couple of prescriptions to Walmart to take advantage of their new generic drug program. One of those precriptions was for Levoxyl - Walmart's generic version is Levothyroxin. Despite an increase in the dosage, I noticed a return of my old symptoms. Knowing that it takes some time for the levels to even out, I decided to stick it out for the entire 6 months. No improvement, in fact, I continued to feel worse. After speaking with both my doctor and the pharmacist, I discovered that not all thyroid replacement medication is equal. The amount of thryoid hormone is the same but each manufacturer uses different binders and that can make a big difference. I'll be switching back to Levoxyl but thought this information might be helpful to anybody else going through the same thing.

Please do not think I am knocking Walmart, that is simply not the case. I think both they and Target have done a great thing with these programs.

First, thanks for the birthday wishes and concern, I do appreciate it. :)

I had hoped I would be caught up on e-mail by the time of this post, thought I was in fact, only to find half a dozen e-mails I started in my draft folder. I've been wondering why I hadn't received replies, now I know why. LOL

So back to the e-mail I go after this post, if you've been expecting to hear from me and haven't by tomorrow, please let me know.

No posts from me usually mean no stitching time and that's been the case until this week, I decided to stay up an hour or so later than normal for a couple of nights to complete this fob:

One of the latest releases from Shepherd's Bush, I also picked up Wishing Sheep and Life & Liberty. The rest are what I call "big count" kits and I'm not overly fond of them, I don't really know why.

Since I don't have much in the way of stitching to share, I thought I'd share another passion of mine - bookmarks. Sounds silly I know. I read a lot, so much so that for the most part, I can pick up a book I've already read 6 months from now and have forgotten enough about it to read it again and enjoy it just as much the 2nd time round. If I'm not stitching or finishing, it's almost a sure bet I have a book in hand. Here are some of my latest finds:

A funny aside here, I ran across old report cards last week and noticed a C- in reading on a couple. I asked my mom just how that could be, I've been a reader all my life, it really surprised me. The things we forget. :)

It's hard to believe it's been 2 weeks since my last post. That's what happens when you spend a good portion of your day on the phone trying to get e-mail problems straightened out and dealing with a nasty sinus infection on top of it. I'm happy to say that I think (I'm knocking on wood, including my own head) both e-mail and sinus problems are behind me. I'm working on getting caught up on e-mails today and if you're expecting a phone call, I'll take care of that tomorrow - depending on how I sound, I don't want to scare anybody!

Remember my post some time ago about my dirty little secret? I'm happy to say that I've made peace with my sewing machine. Perhaps it was just writing about it, perhaps I finally realized it's just a machine. Either way, here's a picture of my new best friend!

A friend asked if I could stitch a tape measure case for her like one I had done for an exchange almost a year ago now. While stitching it, I realized that on today's date it would be 1 year from a time I wasn't sure if my step-father was going to make it. Told by many doctors that even if he did pull through, he would be left with any number of health issues, he is alive and fully recovered. It's amazing to me at times the feelings and thoughts that a little scrap of linen and floss will bring about.

Like most of the country, the tempurature has plummeted to below freezing. I welcome the break from the unseasonably warm weather we had last week but have been worried about the effect on plants just blooming and my latest visitors:

Remember Su's gorgeous finishing on her Shepherd's Bush French Heart Sampler? I was asked if I could do something similar. I don't normally post pictures of my finishing work here but since I've had several comments about this one I thought I'd share my version of Su's wonderful idea:

Heather (I think) had asked for me to share where I shopped for fabric. Part of my criteria when I'm ordering is that they sell fat quarters. Since I mainly use the fabric for finishing ornaments etc., I don't need any more than that. That said, I've had a wonderful (meaning no muss, no fuss) experience at the following shops:

Not feeling my best this week and still dealing with some computer issues I decided I needed a little diversion (at least that's what I kept telling myself), Ella's Slipper has been calling my name since it came through the door.

Isn't it beautiful? Kudos to Jackie for such a wonderful design!

I made a few changes - I didn't have green pins that I liked but did have the purple that match almost perfectly. Also didn't have a dupioni silk in the right shade for the sole so I used the same linen there. I would recommend having some fray check on hand for both the ribbon and the doctor's flannel.

I've been making more changes to the appearance of this blog and in that vein, I've decided to stick with this template for the time being. There's a huge difference in appearance to me with this new monitor as compared to the old one - everything is much lighter. So with that, please let me know your feelings on it - is it hard to read? Is it too light? I figure if it's bothering my eyes it must be bothering others also. :)

The new computer is in place and thanks to my brilliant brother's advice some years back, all my files, e-mails and photos are intact. I'm still having some difficulties getting the scanner to work so for the time being, pictures will have to be with the camera and we all know that's not something I exactly excel at. :(

No personal stitching time at all during all this, I have nothing to show except a few goodies I ordered from Village Mountain Stitchery during their Valentine's Day sale, ongoing through the 14th.

Heather - ewwwww, you could have kept that one to yourself! I'll probably think of feet the entire time I stitch it now!

Andrea - of course you'll see some of that fabric soon but I'm not telling which.

Kali - they are both beautiful designs, my willpower is fading fast.

Silver Thistle - I haven't forgotten you, I promise! The design I used for the biscornu is from The Sweetheart Tree, it's the Amadeus Pinwheel Sachet. Unfortunately, it's a class project. I'm still digging through stash that's boxed away but I have a feeling I no longer have it.

I'm slowly but surely making changes to my photo album and e-mail. There's a storage limit for the photo album that I am constantly battling and e-mail, well, they can't seem to explain why all those e-mails concerning an appendage I don't have make it through but legitimate e-mail doesn't.

The finishing album has been moved to it's own home. The link is over in the right column under the My Links heading. Once the move is complete, I'll be removing it from my main album.

Also under the My Links heading is a link to my website. There's really nothing there other than links but they will always be current.

I don't have much stitching time right now but couldn't resist the urge when I received my package from Shepherd's Bush with the 2007 Scissor Fob in it. Started mid-afternoon and had it finished before bedtime that evening.

I usually take a week or so off around Christmas, this year it lasted a little longer, just haven't been able to shake my yearly after Christmas ho-hums easily this year. Any body else feeling the same way or am I alone?

I don't scrapbook but love the paper! I can't seem to pass it by at the craft store and occasionally try my hand at cards and boxes.

While I managed to pass up every cross stitch sale after Christmas, I couldn't resist a sale at an online fabric store, my fabric stash is rapidly growing and at this rate, will soon outgrow my cross stitch stash.

Yet another storm, ice this time. Lost power for about 3 hours early this morning, many more are still without. Springfield was really hit hard, last report over 70% of the city is without power with another wave to hit this evening and again tomorrow. Please keep those affected in your thoughts.

My Dirty Little Secret.....

I can't sew using a sewing machine. Perhaps it's the machine itself, an old treadle machine that dates about 100 years old that belonged to my grandmother. I've talked about buying a new one but I always seem to find a reason not to. I've finally come to the conclusion that I probably never will. It's simply not something I enjoy, approaching any sewing machine to do more than a basic straight seam fills me with dread and comes close to bringing on a panic attack.

That said, I like challenges and decided I had to make this oragami bag using Blackbird's sampler fabric. I found some vintage black snaps and buttons in my stash that added the perfect finishing touch. While not perfect, I am pretty proud of it.

The Grinch That Stole Christmas.....

isn't a fictional character but is very much alive in Scottsdale, AZ in the form of a postal carrier!

All the stress, drama and trauma of getting the cookie/candy package to my brother on time melted away when I checked the delivery confirmation status online the Thursday before Christmas. I talked to him that afternoon and told him it was at the post office, the online status said a notice had been left. I hear back from him that there wasn't a notice and it was too late to pick it up anyway, he'd do it Friday morning.

Rarely does a phone call that begins with "you'd better sit down" end well. The postal carrier had decided that my brother didn't live at his address - yet personal mail of a financial nature was left the same day. First we were told the packages had been returned; then told they weren't; then told they didn't know where they were. We were told that filling out a change of address form online wasn't good enough and because his is a "rural" post office he needed to come in person to do it (no, it doesn't say that online anywhere - how is the ordinary person supposed to know a rural post office from a non-rural anyway)? We were also told that a delivery confirmation number isn't a "tracking" number even though it reads that way on the official USPS website. The end result, not just my package but all his Christmas packages disappeared and didn't show up until the Thursday after Christmas. Of course the cookies were hard as rocks and the toffee was a melted gooey mess. :(

You can laugh or you can cry becomes my mantra when stuff like this happens. I prefer laughter. After I got over the initial heart failure I teased him unmercifully, telling him he must have been really bad this past year, this was his "lump of coal". We both laughed and I was still laughing Christmas Eve when I decided to sneak a little stitching in. Turned on my stitching lamp, nothing. I wasn't too surprised, I've known it needed replacing. Get another light, settle in, turn the TV on to watch (er, make that listen, I rarely see the screen) to find it's also on the fritz and dies completely a day later. I probably don't need to tell you that I was regretting teasing him so much and felt like this was my lump of coal for doing so. Are you laughing yet? Just wait, there's more!

I hate shopping - I'd rather slam my finger in the door again than go shopping. Especially the day after Christmas. But, how long could I go with no lamp and no TV to stitch by? So off I went, visiting 10 stores in 5 long hours that seemed liked 20. Of course because it was the day after Christmas nobody had much of anything in stock but I came home with both lamp and TV only to find that the picture on the TV was bad. I mean really bad. 2 days later I'm shopping yet again and find another TV and home it comes. If you're counting, I pulled one TV out, put another in, pulled that one back out and put another in. Only to find that this TV has a major malfunction, a green rolling screen keeps popping up, 2 days later it dies and won't stay on. Now I have to pull this one back out and replace it with the 1st new TV (the one with the bad picture). Did I mention that said TV is housed in a large armoire that sits catawampus in the corner? The power strip is on the floor behind it which means every time a TV had to be put in or taken out, I had to crawl through the opening in the back. I have 2 TVs to return tomorrow and am really hoping the 3rd time will be the charm.

All this happened before the New Year so I'm still sticking by my earlier statement that 2007 is going to be a different year. :)

I forgot to mention a caution about Jingle last time - be very careful with both the red and green silks. The red ran very short and that was with me not stitching the top part of the design.

Catching Up On Things, Again.....

I've spent most of this year wondering and complaining about where the time has gone and now that the new year is so close, I find myself wishing it was already here.

When did time speed up? I can remember sitting in school and thinking the clock would never reach 3:30. Or sitting at work and thinking the clock would never reach 5:00. The days just seemed to drag on and on and on. Somewhere, somehow, time reversed itself and I find myself wishing that it would just slow down. A day seems like a minute and more often than not I'm asking myself where did the day, week, month and even the whole year go? Am I the only one who's noticed this?

Another nasty storm hit since my last update, we got off lucky this time, other parts of the state had 12-18" of snow on top of the sleet and ice that fell. Over 500,000 families were without power again, some for over a week.

Things got very hectic after Thanksgiving and I've neglected e-mails, phone calls and most everything trying to meet deadlines. Worked until 3am this past Saturday morning and shipped the last packages that afternoon. All that was left was my Christmas baking, I had grand plans of relaxing the rest of Saturday and baking Sunday and Monday to ship on Tuesday.

My poor brother and sister have been cookie/candy-less all year for one reason or another and there wasn't a chance I was letting them go without for Christmas. Then I find out the post office is saying the last day to ship and have it there by Christmas is Monday. Oh no! Now I have to cram 2 days into one. Kick myself back into high gear but of course, in keeping with my year, anything and everything that could go wrong did.

My brother has been asking, whining, pleading, begging for some English Toffee for oh, probably 4 years now. I was determined to make it this Christmas. I don't really have a recipe for any, so I combed the internet. Oh yeah, did I mention that during these conversations about the toffee he kept throwing in comments about how good See's toffee was? I had my sister bring some when she came last summer so I could try it, we don't have them here.

So, recipe in hand, I fix it, have it poured on the pans but am wondering why in the world it's not setting up. I know my candy thermometer is working correctly and know I cooked it to the right temp. I continue on, melt the chocolate topping, chop the almonds, am half way done sprinkling them and notice an odor. Not one I want to be smelling either, the almonds are stale. Pop one in my mouth and blech, they are staler than stale and of course, I don't have another bag. And wouldn't you know it, this is part of what makes See's toffee so wonderful, according to him anyway. The toffee may not be setting up but the chocolate is doing so rapidly so I race for a spatula to scrape it all off. Finally get every last crumb taken care of, cursing myself for being so diligent about crushing every little piece to smithereens. With no almonds in sight and no, I'm not going back to the store for more, I find some cashews and use them instead. Toffee is still not setting up. I crossed my fingers and moved on to the next batch....

Peanut Butter Balls. That's what my family has always called them but I think they are also known as Buckeyes in some parts of the country. No mess, no fuss there, I've been making these as long as I can remember. Done, I'm taking them to the freezer (yes, they freeze very well and in fact, that's where we store them year round - take a couple out and let sit for 10 minutes or so and they are good to go) when the next drama occurred. To get to the freezer, I have to go from the kitchen through the laundry room to the garage. 2 doors, one opens in, the other out. I know very well that opening the door to the garage quickly will create a draft that makes the other door slam back into it. I'm moving at light speed and that's exactly what happened, with the index finger of my left hand caught in between. About the equivalent of slamming a car door on it. Could I be lucky enough that my finger was pointing the right direction even? Heck no, I won't say anymore.

Later, with things under control again and on some lovely pills, my attention is back on the toffee. Something on the recipe catches my eye. This recipe called for heavy cream instead of water. Only 1/4 cup. I had poured the entire 1/2 pint in and now realize why it's not set. Groaning, I think I just can't make this again, I now have lost time to make up. But it's still so soft I can't even cut it. Decide to throw it in the refrigerator and worry about it later, maybe my brother is going to be doing without yet again. Go back to it later to find it's hard enough to crack into pieces but it's not permanent, the longer it's out, the softer it's getting. Have several people try it, one a die hard "I don't eat sweets" and all proclaimed it was wonderful. We'll see what my brother says but I doubt seriously I will ever make it again, he can just call See's and order some. LOL

Amazingly, the rest of the day and into Monday went without another hitch, or at least, nothing worth mentioning. Didn't get quite as much baked as I wanted but you know, those lovely pills have a way of making it seem like it's just not a big deal.

I know some of you are laughing out there, this year has been one drama after another, you're probably wondering what this new year will bring. Well, I'm on strike. No more falls down the stairs (how many was it this year? I can remember 3 times, perhaps it was more), no more slammed fingers, no power outages, no hospital visits or stays, just no more. I would like, and wish for everybody else, just one drama free year, month, week, heck, at this point, I'll even take a day! :)

Garden Surprise......

It's November, Thanksgiving is but 2 days away, I'm in the middle of the U.S. where it's supposed to be cold this time of year, we've had at least 2 hard freezes. The leaves are gone from the trees and most everything else has died off except the roses, a refreshing splash of color in all the drab surroundings.....

Short and Sweet.......

Things are hectic so I'll make this short and sweet. The stash room is painted and looking spiffy, unfortunately, the chest is still sitting half painted and I won't have time to get to it until after the holidays. :(

On a short note - the only personal stitching I've done in the past month was a last minute Halloween design by Brightneedle - Hatz Bootique. Really cute, it came with a hat button but I couldn't decide where to place it. It traveled overseas where the lovely lady who now owns it will decide where it goes.

On a sweet note, I received a wonderful package from a lovely and generous lady (in the truest sense of the word) in Utah with the most beautifully stitched and finished strawberry from Blackbird Designs. She also sent a Whitman's tin of chocolates, a skein of Gloriana silk in a very yummy color and a lovely card. I loved it all but the strawberry will have a place of honor once I get the room done.
